![]() ![]() Air traffic control towers are elevated structures for the visual observation and control of the air and ground traffic at an airport. Vertical, glazed panels run the full height of the "trailing edge" of the teardrop shape to provide light to the stairwell, while the lift shaft is housed within the front radius. The following table ranks the tallest air traffic control(ATC) towers at airports in the United States. The basic structure is concrete, covered in a vertically fluted, aluminium cladding hung on an intermediate structure. The proposal for this central pillar was not approved, however, and a series of steel profiles now supports the roof around its periphery. Originally, Calatrava had wished to provide full 360° glazing for the air-traffic control level by using a single central pillar of concrete to carry the loads of the roof. The airfield/airspace is tower controlled. The control deck (which also is a truncated and inverted cone) has a wrap-around observation gallery, which provides access to the tower’s mechanical and electronic systems. Barkley Regional Airports tower is one of the FAAs contract tower program towers. Kiewit was selected as the concrete subcontractor on the new Airport Traffic Control Tower and TRACON Facility at Phoenix Sky Harbor. The mast, on a teardrop plan, expands toward its top while rising to a height of 42 meters. The airport expects the mobile platforma tower cab with radios and weather sensors mounted on a trailerwill stay in place until 2028 when the town hopes to erect a permanent ATC tower. Sacramento International forecasts it will handle more than 13 million passengers in 2023, which would put it back to 2019 traffic levels. The symmetrical ramped base, with its inclined frontal glazing, houses technical facilities in one wing and administrative offices in the other. The airport is in the middle of a five-year, $1.3 billion expansion project announced earlier this year. ![]() SMF Director Cindy Nichol adds: “This new state-of-the-art tower will be a significant upgrade to the current facility that will enhance working conditions for air traffic controllers at SMF and ensure the continued safe and efficient management of aircraft operations at the airport.” Sacramento International says in a statement that the current ATC facility is “one of the oldest towers in the country” and the FAA “is prioritizing replacing it.” FlyteCo Tower is a brewery, restaurant, coffee bar and entertainment venue located at a former air traffic control tower in the Central Park neighborhood of. Located just south of the airport’s Terminal B, it is 130 ft. Congress in 2021 and will fully cover the cost of the ATC tower project, according to SMF. Funding comes from the infrastructure law passed by the U.S. The airport serving California’s capital says the new tower, slated to cost $60-80 million, will be completed in 2026.
